As a low-budget nonprofit operating on a low-income reservation, Magpie prioritizes utilizing creative and DIY solutions. From milling our own lumber and fixing our own trucks to uncountable hours of volunteer work by family and allies, we are able to keep costs relatively low while maximizing our impact. As our projects grow, we recognize the need to offer more paid work to our relatives, so that we can leverage our Tiospaye’s skills, experience, and wisdom to build, cook, garden, and teach for each other. We also need to purchase parts, materials, and equipment for some projects. We recognize the importance of keeping money circulating within the family as much as possible, and our model of paying our relatives to work for each other and our childrens’ futures does just that.
